Where Did Massage Start?

A long, long, time a ago.... Check out this information from naturalhealers.com

A Form of Massage Emerges in India

Started practicing massage in approximately 3,000 BCE*, possibly earlier

Believed to be of divine origin and passed down orally through generations, Ayurveda is the traditional holistic medical system in India. Ancient seers and natural scientists developed this system based on centuries of studies, experiments and meditations.

Texts detailing Ayurvedic principles and practices were written some time between 1500 and 500 BCE. Based on these texts, Ayurveda was widely adopted throughout India and Southeast Asia.

Ayurveda views that individuals incur illnesses and diseases when they live out of harmony with their environment. To treat their conditions, individuals must restore their natural mental and physical balance by reestablishing harmony between themselves and the world around them. At that point, they can begin to heal naturally.

Based on the patient’s health imbalances, constitution and the time of year, Ayurveda recommends how to use the five senses to interact with the environment in order to create balance. Treatments in Ayurveda include diet and herbalism, aromatherapy, color therapy, sound therapy and touch therapy.

How interesting is it that Ayurveda practices believe that one gets sick when they are out of harmony? I wonder how many people are off balance in these times. Our technology has evolved, but have we as people? Just something to think about...

Is Your Tension Causing Headaches?

At Shine On, we have many clients that come in and complain about headaches or crippling migraines. Some blame it on the stress from their jobs, others claim they just prone to them. Time after time, our clients leave a session with remarkable headache and tension relief. Massage techniques combined with aromatherapy seem to make headaches dissipate in thin air.

Here's how it works -

Top Reasons Why Massage May Help Migraines

Migraine Relief Center

  • Muscle Spasms or Tension:  Massage in the neck and shoulder regions can help to relax taught bands of tissue, loosening  the sub-occipitals (those muscles attached to the base of the skull),  which cause pain through tension that travels up through the back of the head and into the eye areas.
  • Hormone Regulation:  Hormonal chemical changes often trigger migraines. Cortisol, commonly known as the stress hormone, can be controlled by massage therapy, which also increases endorphin production as well as stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system.
  • Decrease Trigger Point Pain: Neuromuscular therapy, also known as trigger point therapy, targets hyper-irritable, tender, tissue areas that can refer pain to other parts of the body.
  • Improved Circulation: Massage has been shown to increase blood flow, which in turn improves oxygen levels and can help reduce pain.
Pretty interesting, huh? So, if you are experiencing a headache, let us help you!
